1-2-1 Shotgun Tuition in Scotland

Personal coaching from George Elliott — beginners to seasoned shots

George Elliott learned to shoot at the age of five. His father, George Elliott Snr., took him out on the Fife hillsides and taught him with the kind of patience and care that turns a hobby into a lifelong passion. Today, George teaches his own son the same way — and brings that same philosophy to every 1-2-1 session he gives at Birkhill Castle Estate.

Good shotgun shooting isn’t really about the shot. It’s about footwork, balance, mount, and most importantly: reading the bird before you call. George has been watching people shoot for over twenty years, and he has an eye for the small adjustments that make a significant difference. A session with him isn’t just practice — it’s the fastest way to a genuine step change in your performance.

What Does a Lesson Cover?

  • Safety first — handling, loading, and safety protocols. Non-negotiable for everyone, including experienced shots revisiting the basics.
  • Gun fit — a gun that doesn’t fit will work against you regardless of how hard you practise. George will assess your mount and advise on fit.
  • Stance and footwork — where you stand and how you move determines everything else. Most technique problems start here.
  • Gun mount — bringing the gun to your cheek, not your cheek to the gun. George will work on this until it becomes second nature.
  • Swing and lead — reading the bird, picking the right line, and applying the appropriate lead. The bit that takes most people the longest to internalise.
  • Follow-through — the habit that separates consistent shots from inconsistent ones. Easy to understand, harder to hold under pressure.

Who Is 1-2-1 Tuition For?

Complete Beginners

You’ve never held a shotgun and aren’t sure where to start. George is an exceptionally patient teacher who works at your pace and makes the whole experience genuinely enjoyable from the very first session. There’s no such thing as a silly question.

Improving Shots

You shoot regularly but something isn’t clicking. You’re missing birds you feel you should be hitting, or you’ve developed a habit you can’t shake. A session with George will identify the cause and give you a clear path forward.

Game Season Preparation

The season is approaching and you want your eye properly in. A focused 1-2-1 session — particularly on the disciplines most relevant to the birds you’ll be shooting — is far more valuable than unstructured practice.

Young Shots

George is a natural teacher of younger learners. He knows from personal experience the value of learning well from the start, and his patient, step-by-step approach is ideal for young people picking up a gun for the first time.

The George Elliott Approach

George doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all instruction. He watches carefully before he speaks — understanding what the pupil is trying to do, where the disconnect is, and what single change will have the biggest impact. You won’t leave a session drowning in theory. You’ll leave with one or two clear things to work on, a clearer picture of your own shooting, and probably a better score on the next stand.

He also brings a warmth and good humour to his teaching that makes lessons genuinely enjoyable. The combination of Birkhill’s spectacular setting, George’s deep knowledge, and that almost meditative focus that shotgun shooting demands — it makes for a very good few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own shotgun?

No. We provide shotguns (12 and 20 bore, right and left-hand) as part of the lesson. If you have your own shotgun and a valid Shotgun Certificate, you’re very welcome to use it.

How long does a 1-2-1 lesson last?

Standard lessons run for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, which gives enough time to warm up, work through the key areas, and consolidate improvements with some practice shooting. Longer sessions can be arranged on request.

How many lessons will I need before I’m competent?

This varies enormously depending on starting point and how quickly you’re able to practise between sessions. Most beginners see substantial improvement within two or three lessons. Many people book a session, practise independently, and then return for a follow-up to address the next layer of improvement.

Can I bring a friend or partner to watch?

Of course. Partners and friends are very welcome to observe from a safe distance. Many couples and friends book lessons together — though we’d recommend having them as separate 1-2-1s rather than joint lessons for the best progress.

Is 1-2-1 tuition available year-round?

Yes. George is available throughout the year, though weekends and school holidays book up quickly. We’d recommend getting in touch well in advance if you have a specific date in mind.
