Clay Pigeon Shooting in Fife, Scotland

For all abilities — at one of Scotland’s most spectacular estates

Clay pigeon shooting is one of the most satisfying things you can do outdoors, and one of the least intimidating once you’ve done it. There’s a particular pleasure in the concentration it demands — for those few seconds between the call and the shot, everything else falls away.

At Elliott Clays, we run clay shooting sessions on the Birkhill Castle Estate — a 1,500-acre private estate in Fife, just 25 minutes from St Andrews and 20 minutes from Dundee. The estate’s varied terrain means we can set up a wide range of challenging and interesting targets: crossing birds over a valley, rising targets from woodland edges, driven clays from a ridge, and rabbit clays skimming along the ground.

Whether you’ve never picked up a shotgun before or you’re a regular shooter looking for a session with expert guidance, all abilities are welcome. George will make sure you’re comfortable, safe, and breaking more clays than you expected by the end of the session.

Who Is Clay Shooting For?

The honest answer is: everyone. Clay pigeon shooting has a reputation for being niche and exclusive — but that’s simply not the experience we offer at Elliott Clays. We welcome:

  • Complete beginners — curious and slightly nervous. George has a particular gift for teaching first-timers and we promise the nerves disappear after the first few stands.
  • Stag and hen parties — if you’re planning something memorable in Fife or around St Andrews, a clay session makes a brilliant activity. Groups are very welcome.
  • Birthday celebrations and family days — ages 12 and up are welcome with appropriate adult supervision. A birthday at Birkhill beats a bowling alley.
  • Experienced shots — use a session to keep your eye in, try new disciplines, or work on specific technique challenges with George.
  • Those interested in game shooting — clay shooting is the best possible preparation for the real season. A few sessions with George will transform your performance.

Birkhill Castle Estate

Set on the banks of the River Tay with views across to the Angus hills, the Birkhill estate gives your shooting session a backdrop that most shooting grounds in the UK can’t match. You’re not in a car park or a flat field — you’re on 1,500 acres of private Scottish countryside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior experience to take part?

No experience is needed at all. We welcome complete beginners and will walk you through everything before a shot is fired. Most people are breaking clays within the first few minutes.

What age do I need to be?

There is no strict minimum age for clay pigeon shooting, but we welcome participants aged 12 and over. Under-16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please get in touch if you have questions about younger participants.

Can I bring my own gun?

Absolutely. If you have a valid Shotgun Certificate and want to use your own gun, you’re welcome to do so. We supply cartridges or you can bring your own.

Is it suitable for a stag or hen group?

It’s one of the best stag/hen activities available in central Scotland. We handle groups of all sizes and can combine the session with other activities on the estate if required. Just get in touch to discuss.

What’s the difference between a clay session and a simulated game day?

A clay pigeon session is typically 1-2 hours focused on shooting from a fixed location with a range of clay targets. A simulated game day is a full-day event structured to replicate a real driven shoot, with drives across the estate, a full day out, and a meal. Both are brilliant experiences — the game day is simply more immersive and extended.
